Black IPA

Black IPA, also known as “American-Style India Black Ale”, or “Cascadian Dark Ale” or “We’re Not Gonna Get Into the What-Should-We-Call-It-Debate Ale” Nomenclature scandals aside, Black-IPAs are relative newcomers to the world of IPA though they’ve quickly attracted a rabid following from consumers and brewers alike. By adding roasted malts, these IPAs boast a complexion similar to that of Porters and Stouts, as well as sharing many of the smoky and chocolate-filled notes which define those styles. But the hops are still doing the heavy lifting here and thus that signature IPA bitterness is present through it all.

Examples include Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale by Stone, Hoppy Feet by Clown Shoes and Dubhe Imperial Black IPA from Uinta Brewing Company.
